Even the smallest of homes can contain a lot of furniture, clothes, appliances,
pictures and other items. For a short move, it may be worthwhile to transport the
smaller items by yourself, but larger items will either require a professional
mover or some willing friends! |

Generally it's best to get rid of excess items like unused furniture, outdated appliances,
older clothing, the junk in boxes in the garage, etc. by having a garage
sale before you move. This will reduce the amount of items you'll have to move with you, which
can lower your moving costs overall, and also provides a bit of a monetary return on items you might
otherwise toss in the garbage! Keep in mind that items like furniture that do not sell at
your garage sale can usually be donated to a local charity. Most groups will even come to
your home to pick up the donated items.
All other unwanted items that do not sale or cannot be easily thrown in your residential trash should be
taken to your local landfill. Remember to provide the
U.S. Postal Service with your forwarding address, and utility companies should be
contacted so they know when to end service at your old location. Don't forget to check with your utility
companies to see if there is any deposit money due to you. |

Most people don't realize that the time to plan your move begins once you've decided to sell your home.
Some of the activities required to sell the home can actually help you with the overall moving process.
For example, cleaning out closets, basements and attics means there will be less
to do once the home is under contract, and less to actually move when the time comes. |
The plan for your big move will be influenced by a number of things:

Are you moving a long distance? If your answer is yes, you might want an interstate mover
to do the job for you, or maybe you'll get a large truck and take it on yourself.

Are you moving internationally? If you answered yes, you will want to contact contact the State Department.
You may need to contact the US Embassy in the county to which you are moving.
You will also want to make yourself aware of items which may be
prohibited in foreign countries, even though the items may be entirely common in the United States.
Don't forget to ask about customs protocols, duties, taxes and other items you might not be aware of.

Are you moving locally? If the answer is yes, you will want to decide if you are going to move yourself or
hire a professional moving company. Rememeber, even though the trip may be brief, you still need to consider packing boxes
and materials, blankets or padding and a van rental. Also, it is always a good idea to secure the help of friends,
relatives and neighbors in advance.

Remember - Planning is key. Make sure you stock up on boxes, packing materials, tape and markers. Marking each
box by either room or category will make the moving job easier since it will be easy to tell which boxes go in what room.
